You hit the number. The relief lasted a week.

Therapy for high performers running on empty, for whom the circumstances look good and the floor has not moved. Telehealth across Colorado.

You hit the number. Made partner, closed it, got the title, finished the degree, got the body back. The relief lasted about a week, and then the floor was at the same height it had always been, and you have told almost nobody that it did not hold.

This is the least sympathetic problem in the world to describe out loud, which is exactly why it goes untreated for years. The circumstances are, by any external measure, good. So the conclusion most people reach is that the defect is in them.

The arrival fallacy, in practice

The belief is not really that the next milestone will make you happy. Most people are too smart for that by now. The belief is subtler and harder to shake: that the discomfort you are living with is unearned until you have done enough to justify it. So the answer to feeling bad is always more output, and output is the one thing you are extremely good at.

That loop can run for a decade. It is productive. It is also the reason you cannot sit in a room on a Saturday without a task.

What it usually costs first

  • Sleep, well before anything else announces itself
  • The marriage, quietly, through sustained unavailability rather than conflict
  • Two or three drinks that have become structural rather than social
  • An irritability that only the people closest to you ever see
  • The genuine conviction that slowing down is the same as failing

What we work on

Not your ambition. I am not going to talk you out of caring about your work, and therapy that quietly treats drive as a symptom is useless to people like you.

What we take apart is the specific rule underneath it. The one that says rest has to be earned, that need is a liability, that the reason people value you is the output and that the output is therefore not optional. Those rules were usually installed early, they were often accurate at the time, and they are load-bearing, which is why arguing with them directly does not work.

A note on confidentiality

If you are in a visible role, or a small industry, or a leadership position where this would be costly to have known, say that in the first fifteen minutes. We will talk about exactly how records work here before you commit to anything.

Begin

A first conversation costs nothing.

Fifteen minutes on the phone. No paperwork, no obligation. If I’m not the right fit, I’ll say so and point you toward someone who is.
